The client was faced with the prospect of excavating directly in front of new build apartments in order to create a geogrid strengthened slope the dangers were that the apartments would be undermined if any materials migrated down the fully excavated slope prior to the re build.
A&J geotechnical services designed a top down construction where only a small part of the slope would be excavated at any time. Soil nails were installed followed by a woven geogrid held in place by a galvanized steel mesh plated to the embankment. Steel diaphragms held in place the next layer of mesh leaving a 150mm void which was filled with seeded soil a coir covering provided protection to the seedlings which when grown will provide a natural looking river embankment.
One of our top drive rotary percussive drills was used for the installation of the soil nails.
A footbridge was constructed over the river and was founded on 450mm diameter CFA piles installed using our 21 tonne International drill rig.
